Tuesday Assignment for 2D1 English

1.  In the first scene of a play, the dramatist must tell the audience what kind of play it is going to be. How does Shakespeare set the tone of the play in the opening scene?  What is the overall feeling and what are three specific ways Shakespeare develops that tone?

2.  Why did the Thane of Cawdor lose his title? What eventually happened to him? Who becomes the new Thane of Cawdor? Why is he chosen? Who delivers this news?

3.  Create a quadrant chart (like you did for Lady Macbeth's soliloquy in I.v)—each box should answer one question from Macbeth's soliloquy that opens I.vii.

a) What is his mood and why?  Answer - Worried/Apprehensive/Conflicted - explain and use a quote

b) What is his feeling about another character and why? Answer - Duncan - explain and use a quote

c)  What is his future plan and why? Answer - His foot has come down (this is a metaphor)

d)   How does it hint at upcoming conflict? Answer - someone is not going to be pleased with this decision—who would this be?

When finished work on any unfinished quotes from yesterday.
