Tuesday September 4

Welcome back and welcome to my blog!  Two months has a strange way of flying by, doesn't it?

This will be the third year of the blog, Dangelathoughts - the often imitated, but never duplicated finest STM English based blog on the world wibe web.  In fact, we've had hits from over 80 different countries in the world.

This semester, I will again try to update the blog every day.  I will include information about each class - what we did that day, what is for homework and what is coming up in yout class.

Along the sides of the blog you will find many helpful links to e-versions of the texts we study (in the very unlikely chance that you forget your books at school) and sites that will improve your writing skills - dictionaries, grammar skills, how to write a works cited, how to document sources, etc.  Please use them to your advantage.

The blog is a great resource to access if you have been away from school and want to know what you have missed, you were in class, but can't quite remember what we did in class, need to doublecheck upcoming assignment or test days or need some guidance while working through your essay.

Add this blog to your favorites list and use it to keep connected to the class.

Hints for the Essay

Introduction
-open with a general lead (rhetorical question, anecdote, startling statement, famous quote) that grabs our attention and hints at the topic/thesis of the essay

-transition that links the lead with the thesis and mentions the poet and the "title of poem"

-thesis - your argument broken down into one sentence that connects the poem to the theme to the approach you've chosen

Body Paragraphs

-use transition phrases (especially when linking your points in the body paragraphs and in your concluding sentences

-for a good list go to: http://www.smart-words.org/transition-words.html

-must have 3 PPEs (3 supports, explained) in each body paragraph

-body paragraph #1 is a formalistic approach (your interpretation of the theme, based on a careful analysis of the poem)

-body paragraph #2 is another approach (feminist/archetyp/hist.bio/moral); hopefully this approach  supports/connects to the claim made in the first paragraph (ie what you though the theme to be)

Conclusion

-begin with a tranisition, restate the thesis, add a so what? and, to create parallel structure, return to the idea used in the lead

FYI
-use Echoes as your MLA entry (its an anthology)
-remember to try and blend your words with the lines from the poem (a quote should never be its own sentence)
-never, ever refer to the essay as something that is ALIVE ie in this essay... or this quote proves... or this point shows

GOOD LUCK!
