Read the poem several times before attempting the questions.  Support your answers with proof from the poem.

1.                Identify the speaker, the silent listener, and the critical moment in the speaker’s life?

2.                What imagery establishes the setting at the outset of the poem?  Give four examples. What mood does it create?

3.                How is Porphyria portrayed at the beginning of the poem?

4.                What characteristics of the speaker are gradually revealed?

5.                How does Porphyria’s lover justify killing her?

6.                Quote two lines (one where she is alive and one where she is dead) that indicate the change in the lover’s relationship.  Explain your reasoning.

1.  The title "puce fairy book" is actually an allusion to a book called Blue Fairy Book.  What is it, when was it published, what does it contain and what is the connection to this poem?

In part two much of the discussion focusses on why we are here? Not so much on whether we literally travel, but why are we here (on Earth) for such a temporary visit

Hints
Look at the fears she has before drinking the potion - most of the fears you guessed, in class, that she would have - and the two reasons she gives before drinking it:
1.  The Friar, as long as she has known him, has been a holy man (so she has no reason to doubt his motives).
2.  Her resolve to be with Romeo is stronger than her fears.

-finished movie

For the Weekend
-study for Monday's test
-focus on plot (what happens), characters and what they do, irony and conflict

Test Reminders
Use your chapter questions - fill ins/true-false - to review plot and characters.
Use your notes from overheads and short answer questions to review irony and the more detailed type, short answer questions you will see on the test.
Remember, do not confuse the book with the movie.  We are interested in the book.
